Yordan Alvarez can’t seem to catch a break.
The Houston Astros slugger, who has played in just 47 games this season after suffering a broken hand earlier in the year, sprained his left ankle during Monday night’s win against the Texas Rangers. Alvarez was seen in a walking boot after the game.
“It did not look good out on the field,” Astros manager Joe Espada said after the game.
Here’s what to know about Alvarez’s injury:
Yordan Alvarez injury update
Alvarez appeared to step awkwardly on his left foot while scoring a run in the bottom of the first inning against the Rangers. Trainers tended to Alvarez on the field and assisted him back to the dugout and down the clubhouse stairs.
Alvarez, who was seen leaving the clubhouse with a crutch and a boot on his left foot, is scheduled for an MRI on Tuesday.
“I saw him coming around (third base),” Astros teammate Jeremy Peña said. “And then when he stepped on home plate, I had a front-row seat. His ankle kind of twisted, and when he had to plant again, I saw it twist again. And it’s not pretty. You don’t want to see that, especially Yordan Alvarez. We need him.”
Who is Yordan Alvarez’s backup on Astros depth chart?
Zach Cole replaced Alvarez during Monday’s game and wound up blasting a two-run home run with three RBIs. Cole would likely stick as Alvarez’s replacement against right-handed pitchers, with Cam Smith or Mauricio Dubon likely taking his place against lefties.
Yordan Alvarez stats
Alvarez finished Monday’s game 0 for 0 with a walk and run scored before exited. For the season, Alvarez has a .273/.367/.430 slash line with six homers and 27 RBI. He has a .797 on-base-plus-slugging percentage in 199 plate appearances. In the 18 games since his return from a broken hand, Alvarez has a 1.024 OPS with three homers.
Astros playoff picture
Houston is 82-69 and sits just half a game behind the Seattle Mariners for the American League West division lead. If the postseason started today, the Astros would be the AL’s third wild card as they lead the Rangers and Cleveland Guardians by three games with just less than two weeks to play.
