The New York Giants have a long and storied history dating back to 1925. They have won eight NFL championships, including four Super Bowls, and the Pro Football Hall of Fame is littered with their players and coaches.
The story of the NFL could not be written without the Giants, and they added to that story in a 40-37 overtime loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday, just not the way they would have preferred.
With seconds remaining in the fourth quarter and nursing a 37-34 lead, the Giants watched helplessly as Cowboys kicker Brandon Aubrey connected on a 64-yard field goal to send the game into overtime.
Aubrey would then make a 46-yard game-winner as time expired.
“If my man [Aubrey] for the Cowboys didn’t have a bionic leg, we probably do win,” wide receiver Darius Slayton said after the game.
It was an outcome all too familiar for these Giants. They now stand alone in NFL history for surrendering game-tying or game-winning field goals of 60 yards or more. It’s happened four times.
- Brandon Aubrey, 64 yards, September 14, 2005
- Greg Joseph, 61 yards, December 24, 2022
- Graham Gano, 63 yards, October 7, 2018
- Jake Elliott, 61 yards, September 24, 2017
The 64-yard field goal the Giants conceded on Sunday moved them past the Detroit Lions (3) for the all-time lead. No other team in NFL history has been victimized more than once.
